The Afforestation & Reforestation absorb Carbon Di-oxide (CO2) and thus reduce the CO2 in atmosphere. This reduction of CO2 can be used for off-setting the emission of CO2 mainly through industries in developed countries as per the approved guidelines of United Nations Frame Work Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC). It is estimated that by planting 1.00 lakh hectares of new forest, a removal of 10 lakh MT CO2 from atmosphere is possible. Such reduction in CO2 from atmosphere can be traded as Voluntary Emission Reduction (VER) and is in demand in developed countries particularly in US and Europe.
IFFDC has started the process for trading the carbon credit achieved from the plantation developed by the PFFCS under the wasteland development projects undertaken in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh & Rajasthan since 1st April, 1995. To facilitate the carbon credit trading mechanism, IFFDC appointed M/s Emergent Venture India Pvt. Ltd. (EVI) as consultant for preparation of project proposal, development and facilitation of validation, verification of Afforestation/Reforestation Project under Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under UNFCCC & Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) standard. IFFDC has also hired the services of M/S Science, Dehradun and M/S Rainforest Alliance, Indonesia for GPS Mapping and verification / validation of the project as per CCX and CCB standards respectively. Based on the evaluation of M/s EVI, For sale of this carbon stock gain, various options are being explored. The Project Design Document (PDD) of the IFFDC forestry project has been prepared by the consulting firm and uploaded on the websites for the International buyers. The work of GPS Mapping and Validation/verification on CCX and CCB standards is in progress.
