CLIMATE PROOFING INTERVENTIONS

Climate Proofing in Karaiya-Surkhi Watershed , District Sagar (Madhya Pradesh)

The rural poor people in developing countries particularly suffer from the negative impacts of climate change. This is because climate change aggravates their already existential problems, for instance in subsistence farming. They also have the worst prerequisites for facing up to new challenges. The main objective of implementing the Climate Proofing Initiative Project is to enhance the adaptive capacities of vulnerable rural communities in project area, so that, they are better equipped to cope up with climate variability and changes.

The project on “Climate Proofing” in Karaiya-Surkhi Watershed in District Sagar of Madhya Pradesh is being implemented with the help of NABARD under its Watershed Development Fund. The project period is for four years i.e. March 2019 to March 2023..

Progress

  1. Under soil-water conservation measures, 2 Farm Ponds were constructed in farmers' fields to harvest rain water and its utilisation for irrigating the crops.
  2. For Fodder Development, 520 Kilogram of “Bajra, Sudan Sorghum Grass (SGG) and Nutri Seed” has been provided to 60 farmers of project villages for sowing in 25 acre area. It will help in improving health cattle and increase Milk Production.
  3. 55 Kits of improved Vegetable seeds such as Bitter Gourd, Okra, Pumpkin and Bottle Gourd have been provided to 55 Farmers and SHG members to increase nutritive food availability in the area.
  4. Under promotion of bio-fertilisers, 30 Kits of IFFCO Water Soluble fertilizers, Bio-fertilisers and Sagarika have been provided to farmers.
  5. 3 training cum exposure visits were organised to Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVKs) for 75 farmers in which technical knowledge on organic farming, Water Use Efficiency (WUE) and Weather Information based, Crop Cultivation etc. were imparted.

Outcome

  1. The Watershed Community is aware about Climate Change, its effect and tools & techniques to deal with Climate Change (drought conditions).
  2. Watershed Community started adoption of livelihood options which are less affected in adverse Climatic Conditions.
  3. Developed Water Resources are helping in increasing crop yields in the project area.
  4. Watershed Community is having own institution at village level for sustainability of the project interventions.
  5. The nearby communities of the project area are also learning various measures to deal with Climate Change through dissemination of the project impact.
